Evaluation

Both articles helped me gain more information about African culture and their dance when researching to include more information for my target audience. The research helped me decide on final drafts and how I should organise my article. Research was very important as it made me aware of not what to include. To complete a good article I research formats of other articles which may or may have not had the same article as mine and it helped me have an idea of what my final article will look like. By researching all these articles it helped me see that not all articles are over loaded with text. Many include images that suit with the article. I found this interesting as I could add content but I could switch it up with my own primary sources and own written text. I came across videos on YouTube that showed me different styles of dance that are popular within the African community and it helped me complete my article based on history of the African culture.

Over all research helped me a lot as my written style in my own article improved in my final draft. I looked at how text was positioned and that the fact that text was not overwhelming. My written style depended on the target audience, in one article it was mainly formal but within the other it had a mixture of informal and formal text according to my target audience, but for my teen articles I will include an interview which will relate to the reader. My layout ideas came very quickly as I got ideas from my research. I made sure I experimented with columns and gutters, I also changed positions of my images so I could decide my final look. The research was a good impact as I knew what content to include in my articles. I made sure my text was written well and wouldn’t be biased towards anyone. I also made sure my content was true and not fake as viewers may be upset by the content produced. My mode of address was different for both target audiences.

As one of my articles was about rivalry of two dance groups which was mainly informal and based to inform the audience about two dance groups who are popular within east London. In another article I made it very formal with facts about the history of the African dance culture and made sure there were no jokes included as it was very serious and straight forward.

Recce

  • There may be some footage of the dancers battling in their dance studio
  • This the location in which the dance studio is located (Pembury circus community centre)
  • I may decide to include an interview I did with people who have witnessed them dance in action so I can get an insight of how the audience feels about these rival dance groups. I will also do this interview to get an idea of how the dancers may act behave once they have to join together to create a choreography for a performance or dance video.
  • As well as interviews with the audience there will also be some footage where AfroUK and WANF LDN have joined together to create a dance for a music video they featured in.

Task 1C

Legal, moral and ethical issues.

There may be a countless amount of legal, moral and ethical issues within my article if my target audience do not think the content in it is suitable. I will analyse each of these problems thoroughly to make sure i do not offend my audience in any form. I will make sure that my article is not offensive and bias towards dancers. Before i intend on copying some quotes from other articles based on dancers i shall follow the copyright legislation. I will also have the copyright rule against my article making sure others do not go against this on my article by using my article without permission. I shall have a signature at the end of my article to let them know that the article was written and published by me. I will make sure I don’t offend anyone's gender, race, disability. I will avoid to use anyone's trademarks as it may cause more copyright problems from other businesses. The accuracy of my article must make sure that they don’t mislead my audience. They must also make sure that they don’t alter or change any facts as this will undermine the audience's trust in the content. My article will not include harm and offense TV journalists have a responsibility to protect children and young people from unsuitable content as well as the rights of freedom of expression and freedom to receive information. I will also make sure I include simple ethics such as being truthful and not biased. I will not talk about a dancers privacy without permission. I will not publish a false statement that is damaging to a person's reputation; a written defamation.

Ofcom is the UK’s communications regulator. Ofcom has a statutory duty to take into account in its decisions the views and interests of those who live in different parts of the UK. Our operations in the nations are led by a senior Director in Glasgow, Cardiff, Belfast and London. Our national offices can draw on the full resources of the whole organisation to tackle issues that affect one part of the UK. Conversely, those operations ensure that the views, needs and special circumstances of the nations receive Ofcom's attention. Ofcom may be able to help you complain about, or report, issues relating to phone and postal services, and TV or radio programmes. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is the UK’s independent regulator of advertising across all media. We apply the Advertising Codes, which are written by the Committees of Advertising Practice (CAP). With any complaint the ASA receives, our focus is on providing a proportionate and fair process for all involved. We don’t play a numbers game – just one complaint can prompt us to take action if there appears to be a problem under the advertising rules. We take all complaints seriously but we look at whether or not the rules have been broken rather than simply basing our decisions on the number of complaints an ad might prompt. We accept complaints from both the public and the industry. We protect the anonymity of members of the public who lodge complaints with us unless there is a good reason to reveal their details and we have their permission to do so (e.g. they want their name taken off a mailing list). If a complainant is someone acting in an official capacity, for instance they represent a competitor of the advertiser they’re complaining about, we will require them to be named.

The PPC is a comprehensive database housing information on complaints investigated by the Press Complaints Commission from 1996 to 2014. Adjudicated The Commission can elect formally to adjudicate on any unresolved complaint. This means that the Commission issues a ruling on the substance of the complaint, which is published on this website. If the Commission finds an outstanding breach of the Code, it will uphold the complaint against the publication. The publication will then have to publish the Commission's ruling in full on its pages, with a headline reference to the PCC and with due prominence. If the Commission finds no outstanding breach of the Code, the complaint will be recorded as not upheld. Resolved A complaint is deemed to be resolved when the PCC has been able to negotiate a resolution with the publication concerned that is satisfactory to the complainant. Some of the ways of achieving this are: the publication of a correction or an apology; a follow-up piece or letter from the complainant; a private letter of apology from the editor; an undertaking as to future conduct by the newspaper; or the annotation of the publication's records to ensure that the error is not repeated.

Task 1B

Proposal

  • Target audience
My target audience is teenagers (roughly from the ages of 13-19) who enjoy music and dance as it is more likely to intrigue them as music and dancing may be their favourite topics. The secondary audience are those surrounded by them who may also be interested in music and dance, for example Adults. These adults may be the parents of young music/dance lover, they may have loved music and dance before or currently enjoy music and dance, or they may be choreographers and music artist, therefore they may appreciate the widespread of joy I may be representing within my article to those who read my article on their chosen media platform.

  • Purpose
The purpose of this article is to entertain the audience as they learn to also enjoy the delight that others may feel whilst dancing or listening to music as although my article will be informal it will also withhold some humorous comments from dancers which I have interviewed to gain more information on dance which I may have not known of before even though I tend to enjoy dance. It is also due to educate the primary and secondary audience about information they may have not known about African dance as there are many corners of African dance that isn’t known to the audience until they have experienced/ seen it for themselves.

  • Platform
As the target audience are teenagers I will need to present my article on a presentable media platform where they are most likely going to view my article. Therefore, the most convenient place to post my article will be the social media for example; snapchat news, Instagram sponsor adverts, Smart phone news applications. This is because as they are young they are not most likely going to view it in a newspaper because not many youths of today read the newspaper, There are a few that do but it isn’t very popular within teenagers today. Teenagers often use snapchat and Instagram therefore they’ll most likely be able to read my article on snapchat or Instagram even if it is not intended to which makes them passive viewers. Some adults also use snapchat and Instagram, not as often as teenagers but a few do therefore my secondary audience will also be able to view my article via snapchat and Instagram. I chose Smart phone news applications because some teenagers turn on their notification system for the news on their phones if the news may be personalised to what they are interested in. Also adults may also view this news application instead of buying and reading a newspaper in the morning before they make their way to work.

  • Summary
My article will be based two rival dance groups who also have fun when they join up together in Hackney to have dance battles or to make choreography’s for music videos which they have been in together. I will interview the leaders from both groups to find out what really happens behind closed doors. The interview may be humorous to show that although they may be seen as rival groups once they are battling to see who the best at dancers are.

  • Length
My article will be two pages long as I believe this will give me enough space to write more information based on African dancing, both dance groups, interviews and any more information that will be needed to be mentioned within my article. I will make the article as interesting as possible to keep the attention of my audience and to make sure they do not lose any focus because they may think that the article drags on and is boring.

  • Images / Graphics / Interactive elements
For my images that will featured within my article I will use YouTube videos that I have made on my own YouTube channel and videos from the dancers on their YouTube channels, but I will only proceed with this if I have permission from them to use their videos. I will also use images from google images and Instagram of these groups and my own photography which I have taken in my own spare time of some of the dancers in action. This may be tricky to be done as it is the exam period therefore most of these dancers are in either school/college/university as the age range is from 15-21 therefore most of these dancers may not have enough time to find time on their timetable to find the opportunity to help me with my article as they may be packed with competitions, music videos, dance rehearsals and exams. They have to juggle their schedule therefore it may be more convenient to use videos and pictures I have took of them before and their images on google images and Instagram.

  • Logistics
The location for the photography that will be included within the article may be taken on stage as it may be their competitions/performances, in a dance studio, in a location where the music video has been taken for example; a skate park.

  • Resources (equipment, space, cost etc.)
Resources needed to complete this article will be a camera, an application which I will be able to access to complete my article as it will be electronical, A hardware which will allow be to easily access the software that will provide this application (A computer), Pembury community centres dance studio since I will need to take photographs and videos of the dance groups battling and dancing. The camera, application and computer will be given to me from my college therefore it will be free however, I will need to book a time slot for the dance studio in Pembury community centre which may or not have a cost fee. I will call up the centre to find out on any information I need according to cost.

Task 2C

Comparison

The advantages of digital publishing compared to traditional printing are, Digital publishing can give a variety of content across multiple devices such as smartphones and tablets.

A few examples of traditional printing are Screen printing, Lithography, Gravure and Flexography compared to digital publishing these methods are a lot more time consuming as it has to be done by hand whereas digital publishing can be done on a computer. Another advantage is that more people are going online and using smartphones/tablets which means they spend more time looking at the news and reading books online than going and buying a newspaper, magazine and books etc. A few examples of digital publishing are e-magazines, e-newspapers, adverts, DVD covers, Training materials, promotional material, flyers, e-books and leaflets.

For example if you were to use an e-book, the advantages of this would be that it can be purchased instantly instead of going to a book store and buying a book, you can take it on the go with you and it’s easy to put away as you can just put your smartphone or tablet in your bag/pocket, can offer free samples of books, magazines to lure more customers into using e-books and lower production costs. The disadvantages of an e-book are, that it can be easily pirated, cannot be signed/autographed which means it loses sentimental value, harder to loan friends as you won't want to give them your smartphone/tablet and a change of reading experience as many authors such as J.K Rowling don't want their books being turned into an e-book as it changes the experience of reading the book.

Overall I think that digital publishing is better than traditional publishing as it’s a lot more modern and many more people use digital publishing.

Task 2B

Digitally published products
Where are they published today?
E-magazine/ E-newspaper/ E-book
It is becoming common to distribute books, magazines, and newspapers to consumers through tablet reading devices e.g. kindle
Adverts
Adverts can be either visual or audio to market products to their audience. They can be published on social media, websites, and commercial breaks on the television.
DVD or CD
Today, not many people go out of their way to buy CD’s or DVD’s. Therefore, they are able to access CD Albums through the internet on music applications e.g. YouTube, Spotify, and soundcloud. They can also watch films which are usually exhibited on DVD’s on online film websites/applications e.g. Netflix and 123movies.
Flyers
Flyers can be published as well as printed as hardcopies onto the internet. They are published on websites as it is easier to view for the audience and to market their products.
Leaflets
Just like flyers, Leaflets can also be published onto websites so their products can be marketed to their audience easily.

Task 1b: Comparison

Purpose of digitally published products

The use of digital technology to replace written material so that it can be spread and accessed through computerized electronic devices. The original term "electronic publishing," is slowly being replaced by the terms electronic publishing and digital publishing. All three to describe the same technology, however, the term "digital publishing" is most frequently used by companies offering electronic services.

The purpose of digitally publishing within advert photography there is usually a focus point so that the audience focuses on that specific object. For example, in this advert image chosen the Starbucks cup is the depth-of-field so that it is the main focus as the advert oi marketing the object therefore it’ll gain more customers. However, Flyers can also be seen as advertising events/parties etc. Flyers need to be interesting and full with colours depending on the topic to promote their topic. For the flyer I have chosen the producer has used flags which relate to what they are trying to promote to their audience. They have also made it clear what this flyer is meant to present by the text on the flyer. They have also made additional contacts so the audience is always connected by adding where there can listen to the mix being promoted and the DJs contact information.
